Torres Base or Fitz Roy? Differences and similarities between Patagonia’s most iconic hiking trails

Hiking in Patagonia is much more than an outdoor activity: it’s an experience that connects travelers with unique landscapes, unpredictable weather, and a sense of adventure not found anywhere else in the world.

Located in the far south of Chile and Argentina, Patagonia offers some of the most spectacular hiking trails on the planet.

Two of them, considered trekking gems in South America, attract thousands of mountain lovers each year: the Base Torres Trail in Torres del Paine National Park (Chile) and the Laguna de los Tres Trail in El Chaltén (Argentina), famous for its views of the Fitz Roy massif.

On our Best of Patagonia trip, you’ll have the opportunity to explore both trails, combining trekking in Torres del Paine with trekking in El Chaltén.

Torres Base: Chile’s trekking icon in Torres del Paine National Park

📍 Región de Magallanes, Chile.

Located in the impressive Torres del Paine National Park, the Base Torres trek is probably the most famous hiking postcard of Chilean Patagonia. The approximately 18-kilometer round-trip route has a vertical gradient of nearly 900 meters and crosses diverse ecosystems: valleys, rivers, suspension bridges, and lenga forests, before facing the final ascent over a rocky moraine.

The effort is worth it: upon reaching the viewpoint, we find an emerald-colored glacial lagoon at the foot of the three impressive granite towers that give the park its name. This point is, for many, the symbolic summit of any trip to Torres del Paine.

The best time to hike this trail is between October and March, coinciding with the southern spring and summer, when the days are longer and the temperature is more pleasant. However, you should always be prepared for the sudden changes in weather characteristic of hiking in Patagonia.

Fitz Roy and Laguna de los Tres: Patagonia’s most famous silhouette

📍 El Chaltén, Argentina.

On the other side of the mountain range, in the province of Santa Cruz, lies El Chaltén, a small town known as the national trekking capital of Argentina. From this small mountain village, the trail to Laguna de los Tres begins, the most famous route to see Fitz Roy in all its splendor.

With an approximate length of 20 kilometers round trip and a vertical drop of about 1,000 meters, the journey to the impressive glacial lagoon combines gentle trails through forests and viewpoints, with a more challenging final ascent that leads directly to the spectacular spires of the massif.

Fitz Roy is one of the most recognized hiking symbols in Argentine Patagonia and a magnet for mountaineers and photographers from around the world. So much so that its silhouette has been immortalized forever in the famous Patagonia clothing brand. Did you notice?

First-person experience: What’s our travelers’ favorite?

In March of this year, we explored the jewels of the Chilean and Argentinean end of the world with a new group of explorers. We hiked, sailed, observed wildlife, and immersed ourselves in the local culture. After 14 days of travel, we tell you, from the words of our Epic Explorers, what their favorite hikes in Patagonia are:

Pedro Serrano

Traveler from Madrid
🌟🥾 Favorite: Fitz Roy and Laguna de los 3

“I liked the Fitz Roy trail the most.

It felt more alpine, very adventurous, very windy, and clouds in the background. Plus, crossing the river and seeing the colors of the forest in autumn was amazing.”

Antonio Franco

Traveler from Huelva
🌟🥾 Favorite: Torres Base in Torres del Paine

“I’ve been trying to make this trip for many years, and it’s truly been a dream come true. For me, reaching the top of Torres del Paine was the most epic moment of the trip.

Throughout my life, I’ve seen many, many mountains, but seeing Torres del Paine was indescribable.”

So now you know, Patagonia has a place for everyone.
Can you imagine which trail will be your favorite?
